What is a Fertility Monitor?
A fertility monitor is a digital device designed to tell you your most fertile days in your individual cycle, thus telling you on which days you have the highest chance of conceiving. Fertility monitors may analyse one or a combination of the following: hormone levels in urine, body temperature, vaginal fluids or saliva. You have only a few fertile days in each cycle so you will optimise your chances of conceiving if you correctly identify these crucial days.
Tips for increasing your chances of conceiving
- Monitor your cycle - watch out for any irregularities or unusual patterns; record all dates in case they are required by the medical profession in the future
- Keep an eye on your own and your partner’s health - cut down on alcohol, avoid smoking, eat sensibly, exercise.
- Take folic acid if you are actively trying to conceive (TTC)
- Use a fertility monitor.
ClearBlue Fertility Monitor
The ClearBlue Fertility Monitor analyses hormone levels in your urine, and gives you a daily fertility status on the monitor’s display screen. This ClearBlue brand of fertility monitor is very accurate and identifies your specific fertile days better than any other method. This fertility monitor is recommended for use only in assisting in achieving conception; it is not intended as a method of contraception. The ClearBlue fertility monitor shows you three different levels of fertility:
- Low Fertility: very small or low chance of conceiving - shown by one bar on the bottom left of the screen
- High Fertility: increased chance of conceiving, but still not at the optimum levels - shown by two bars on the left of the screen
- Peak Fertility: highest or optimum chance of conceiving - shown by three bars on the left of the screen
The ClearBlue fertility monitor has been proven to almost double your chances of conceiving, as opposed to not using this fertility monitor.
How the ClearBlue Fertility Monitor works
The Clearblue Fertility monitor consists of a handheld monitor and test sticks - both are required to assess your peak fertile days. The Clearblue fertility monitor uses the disposable urine sticks to decide your fertility level on the days during your cycle that you are asked to test. It does this by investigating the hormone levels in your urine on the test stick. It is suitable for use with women whose cycle is between 21 and 42 days in length. For women with an average cycle of around 28 days, approximately 10 fertility monitor test sticks will be required for each cycle. For women whose cycle is irregular or considerably longer, you may need to use up to 20 test sticks in each cycle.
How to use your ClearBlue Fertility Monitor
Your Clear Blue fertility monitor requires disposable Clear Blue fertility monitor sticks or fertility monitor test sticks - these are not supplied with the fertility monitor. They can be purchased in packs of 20 which are enough test sticks for 2 cycles for women who have regular periods. Only Clear Blue fertility monitor test sticks can be used with your ClearBlue fertility monitor. Clear Blue fertility monitor test sticks can only be used once.
You can start using your Clearblue Fertility Monitor on the first day of your cycle, i.e. the first day of your period / menses. Please also see the instruction leaflets supplied with both your fertility monitor and your Clear Blue fertility monitor test sticks. See the important note below these bullets regarding the best time to set your ‘m’ button.
- After the first day of your period, simply turn on your Clearblue fertility monitor every day, but it must be turned on during the six-hour time frame set on day 1 of your period.
- Note - the day of your cycle will always be shown on the top right hand corner of your fertility monitor screen.
- On the days that your fertility monitor decides you need to take a test, a small image of a test stick will appear on the screen of your test, with an arrow to its right flashing and pointing left towards the test.
- Always use first morning urine for testing as this is when your hormone levels are at their most concentrated.
- Remove the protective plastic covering from the fertility monitor test stick and use it immediately.
- Either :
- (A) Hold the sample end of your Clear Blue fertility monitor test stick pointing downwards into your stream of urine for 3 seconds
- (B) Immerse the sample end of your fertility monitor stick for 15 seconds into your urine sample that has been collected in a clean dry container.
- When the 3 or 15 seconds have passed, continue holding the test stick downwards, take the cap off the dry end or handle of the test stick and place it over the wet or actual testing area of the fertility monitor test stick.
- Wipe the test stick to remove any urine that may be on the stick before inserting it into the fertility monitor.
- Hold the test stick by the cap and, ensuring that the ‘cut corner’ is pointing downwards, place the test stick into the fertility monitor until you hear a click.
- Your fertility monitor will show a flashing image of a test stick for approx. 5 minutes while the information from your test stick is being processed.
- When the information has been processed, the flashing image of the test stick stops flashing and a flashing arrow appears to the right of it, pointing to the right, implying remove the test stick from the fertility monitor.
- Dispose of your fertility monitor test stick - they can only be used once.
- After your remove your test stick, the display will show your fertility status for that day - low, high or peak fertility as explained above.
- As you approach the end of your cycle, the ‘m’ symbol will flash on the screen of your fertility monitor to indicate that either your period is due or, if you suspect that you may have conceived, to take a pregnancy test. Inhealth stocks all types of pregnancy tests including ClearBlue Pregnancy tests.
NB: Pressing the ‘m’ button sets the time frame that you need to do your tests in for your fertility monitor. It sets this time as three hours before you press the test button up to three hours after you press the button. So if you get your period at 8pm, and press the ‘m’ button then, your time frame will be 5pm to 11pm, i.e. six hours - three hours before and three hours afterwards. As you are recommended to use first morning urine for your
ClearBlue fertility monitor, in this case you would be better to wait until the following morning to press the ‘m’ button, so that your time frame is appropriate for use with first morning urine.
