What Causes Hair Loss?
The science of hair loss is still evolving, specialists struggle to define why certain hair follicles are programmed to have a shorter growth period than others, however a variety of factors can influence hair loss:
Hormones: Abnormal levels of androgens (male hormones) which are produced by both men and women.
Genes: Influenced by both male and female parents, genetics can influence a person’s predisposition to male or female pattern hair loss.
Stress: Alongside illness and childbirth, all these factors may cause a temporary form of hair loss.
Drugs: Including chemotherapy drugs used in cancer treatments, to beta-blockers, birth control pills and blood thinners.
Burns: Injuries and x-rays can all cause temporary hair loss, however in most cases hair regrows once the injury heals unless a scar has formed.
Hair Styling: Chemical treatments, bleaching, tying hair up can all contribute to overall thinning of your hair by weakening the hair shaft and making it brittle. Heat styling tools, can also damage and break the hair, even though you may experience hair loss, in most instances the hair does grow back.
Medical Condition: Thyroid disease, lupus, iron deficiency, diabetes, anemia and eating disorders.
Diet: A diet low in protein or a severely calorie restricted diet may also result in temporary hair loss.
