Tens Machines for Men and Women
To some people, Tens machines may just be associated with labour pain relief. But Tens machines can be used for both men and women for many kinds of pain relief, e.g. when you have problems with pain in muscles, joints and nerves. Unlike most medication, there are no side effects from using tens units. But the level of pain relief that is achieved by the use of a Tens machine varies greatly from person to person who suffer from the same condition.
Care must be taken to follow the tens machine instructions exactly as provided. Tens machines are not suitable or appropriate for all kinds of conditions or pain. If you are unsure about whether or not to use a Tens machine, please consult your doctor.
How do you use a Tens machine?
As there are many different types and brands of Tens machines, you should always carefully and closely follow the specific instructions supplied with your chosen Tens machine. Some of the following points may be useful in regard to your Tens machine:
-
Ensure that your Tens unit is not turned on before you place the electrodes on your skin.
-
To test the Tens machine before applying the electrodes to your skin, hold the electrode pads between your fingers and turn the Tens unit in. You should feel a mild tingling feeling or sensation from the electrode pads.
-
Before applying the electrodes to your skin, ensure that the area of skin that you wish to place the electrodes on is clean, dry and, most importantly, free from any kind of skin irritation, i.e. grazes or cuts.
-
Place the electrode pads close to the location of the pain, but not directly on top of the pain. Do not place the pads closer than 2 to 3 cms from each other. Your Tens unit should be supplied with a diagram to assist you with the placing of the tens electrodes.
-
Check the settings of your particular Tens unit and turn the pulse rate to the lowest setting to start you off. You may need to adjust these settings/ levels / modes on your Tens machine until you find what works best for your individual pain relief requirements.
-
After turning on your Tens machine, you will probably feel a tingling sensation. This is very normal.
-
The length of time to use your Tens machine and the frequency of use will again depend on your condition and the amount or level of pain relief that you require. Again please follow the instructions provided with your Tens unit.
All Tens machines stocked by Inhealth are delivered the next day from Ireland.
