Chlamydia
Chlamydia is the most common STI (sexually transmitted infection) in Europe. Chlamydia is caused by the bacteria Chlamydia trachomatis, which is transmitted during unsafe sexual intercourse. About 1% of all women in the UK aged between 16 and 19 have the infection. Studies prove that 2% of all men and women aged between 15-30 are infected with Chlamydia. Chlamydia is most common among women aged 15-25, and is highly contagious. Unsafe sexual intercourse with someone infected, results in a 70% chance of transmission.
Consequences
Chlamydia infections can cause serious complications. At first, it causes vaginal discharge, inflammation en pain in the stomach. Untreated Chlamydia can cause infections to the eyes, throat and longs and lead to infertility. Because an infection with the Chlamydia trachomatis bacteria often comes without any symptoms, a large group of infected people are unaware of their infection. It is estimated that 70% of the infected women do not experience any symptoms during their infection. This enables easy transmission to others.
It is very important that pregnant women are tested for Chlamydia infection as the chance of transmitting to their newborns is very high.
Treatment
It is very important as well as very easy to treat a Chlamydia infection. Treatment normally comprises a simple antibiotic cure.
