All about Grobags
Grobags are used as bedding for babies of all ages and sizes (from over 8 1/2 lbs) and young children up the age of three. Grobags are used instead of the traditional sheets and blankets on a baby’s or small child’s bed - whether that is a moses basket, a crib or a cot. The baby or small child can either be dressed for bed in the Grobag baby sleep bag or, if the child is already asleep, can be gently laid on the open Grobag which is designed to be fastened without waking the child.
Features of Grobags
The small size of Grobag (0 - 6 months) has shoulder and under arm press-fasteners or poppers, and a zip to one side with zip-click (a safety feature to stop the baby or child opening the zip). The under-arm press fasteners help adjust the arm size for smaller babies. The two larger size Grobags zip up the front, and also have zip-clicks. All the Grobags are made of 100% cotton on the outside, and inside is 100% soft jersey cotton, making them very easy and quick to wash and dry. All of these Grobags are available in three sizes: 0 - 6 months, 6 - 18 months and 18 - 36 months.
Safety and comfort features of a GroBag
Grobags are designed with the safety of your baby as a top priority. First of all, the Gro company recommend that your baby weighs more than 8 lbs 8 ozs before using a Grobag. Regardless of the weight of your baby or the size of the Grobag, you must ensure that your baby’s head cannot pass through the neck of the Grobag when it is fastened / tied. All babies are different in regard to weight or size so it is recommended you check your selected Grobag. The larger size Grobags with a zip down the front have a chin or zip guard to prevent rubbing.
Choosing the size of your Grobag
The Gro Company who make Grobags have guidelines for the recommended minimum weights and maximum heights of your child for each of their three sizes of Grobags. Please see the table below for further information:
| Size of Grobag |
Recommended Minimum weight
of your baby or child |
Recommended Maximum length
of your baby or child |
| 0 - 6 Months |
Over 8 ½ pounds / 4 kgs |
Maximum 27 inches or 68 cms |
| 6 - 18 Months |
Over 18 pounds / 8.1 kgs |
Maximum 34 inches or 86 cms |
| 18 - 36 Months |
Over 25 pounds / 11.4 kgs |
Maximum 39 inches or 98 cms |
The minimum weights are to ensure that your baby’s neck will not pass through the neck of the Grobag when fastened. The maximum recommended lengths are to allow for lots of kick room in the Grobag.
Tog Rating of Grobags
A tog rating is an indication of the warmth of the Grobags - the higher the tog the warmer the Grobag. Grobags are available in two different tog ratings - 1.0 tog and 2.5 tog. The 1.0 tog rating is for summer weather and naps during the day - typical temperatures of 21 - 23°C. The 2.5 tog rating is for use all year round based on typical room temperatures of 10 - 20°C.
Additional Factors to consider when choosing the tog rating of your Grobag
-
It is always good to know the temperature of the room in which the baby or small child is sleeping. The Gro Company produce their own room thermometer, the
Gro Egg which shows the temperature of the room both in digital format and by the colour of the egg.
-
Consider what clothes you like your baby or small child to wear. How many layers will your baby have on - long or short sleeved body suit or vest, pyjamas or a sleepsuit? As a baby’s hands are often cold, the best place to check if your baby is too warm is by placing two fingers on your baby’s chest.
